San Jose is an early adopter of green building and energy policy. In 2018 the City adopted the Climate Smart San Jose Plan that includes measures related to electrifying appliances and increasing the use of renewable energy. R+A is working as part of a consultant team that is advising the City on implementing the building and energy related actions. R+A is identifying regulatory, program, and incentive pathway to electrify existing buildings. The objective is to build on existing programs including an energy and water benchmarking program, energy reach code, and annual reporting for rental units to capture the majority of the building stock in the City. Our role is to define and evaluate the various options in terms of number of buildings affected, greenhouse gas savings, impact on City resources, and time to implement.
